The Alvin Manufacturing Company is considered one of the finest early-American producers of sterling silver. The quality seen in this striking Antique Alvin Co. Green Vase with Sterling Silver Overlay presents a premier sample of their quality work.
Striking transparent green glass, with a flaring top, sits within a beautiful sterling silver overlay of latticework. Within this latticework a flower design is situated at each cross over. One diamond, filled with a silver panel, contains a monogrammed letter B.
Ultimately, the latticework meets at the bottom of the vase where the silver work spreads into a sterling base. Along the rim of the base lies a faded marking. The visible markings are “G 32 3 8”.
The Alvin Silver Manufacturing Company has operated under several names since its inception in 1886, and to this day manufactures as a subsidiary company of Gorham Mfg Co.
However, it was not until the turn of the 19th Century, when Alvin began to manufacture silverware based on historical patterns, that they met with great success. Ultimately, this move positioned Alvin as a significant competitor of the American giant Gorham Mfg. Co. prior to amalgamation.
