Backwater River Scene by Florida Highwayman Lemuel Newton featuring trees and birds. A lovely Florida scene painted in the 1960s in oil on Masonite board. Artist singed bottom center right using palette knife to score name into the paint layer. Newton has created a wonderful piece depicting a serene moment using vibrant tones throughout his landscape. Lemuel Newton was the youngest of three Newton brothers who became known as Highwaymen. He was also the least visible of the three. Artist is deceased.
The Highwaymen artists specialized in painting Florida landscapes in a flamboyant style. As it was not possible for them to sell their paintings in art galleries and shows, they were selling them right from the backs of their trucks, that’s how they gained their name – Highwaymen.
With frame item measures approximately 28 ½” Wide x 22 ½” Tall
Masonite measures 24” Wide x 18” Tall
Item is in very good pre-owned condition. The color is excellent with no noticeable blemishes. Artist signed on bottom center right. Frame is in good shape with no chips, cracks or major blemishes.
