Vintage clockwork Schuco red racing car tin toy. A well loved and fabulous little piece of automotive collectible history with functioning steering and gear stick. The majority of the information about this model is on the underside of the chassis. On the base of the car the words “Schuco Examico 4001” catch your attention. Sandwiching this is the information “Schuco Patent Auto 4001” and “Made in US Zone Germany”. Therefore, this item is dated post second world war after the segregation of Germany, most likely in the 1950s when the Schuco factory continued production.
This mid-century model has a clockwork mechanism which propels the toy on its four rubber wheels. Painted to match the auto body the hubcaps are additionally racing red.
Heinrich Müller and the businessman Heinrich Schreyer founded Schuco in Nuremberg in 1912. The company’s specialty was usually cars and trucks in tin, plastic and die-cast. In 1976 Schuco declared bankruptcy, however, the company reorganized in 1993 and then totally independent once more by 1996.
