Description
Patchboxes are small, decorative trinket boxes, with the purpose of holding fabric patches, a popular Georgian fashion trend. These beauty patches—also referred to as “mouches,” the French word for “flies”—were made of fabrics like silk and velvet. They were adhered to the face with mastic or saliva as decorative beauty spots, and popular to cover blemishes with.
Measurements are 1 ⅝” length, 1 ³⁄₁₆” depth, and ¹⁵⁄₁₆” height. Condition is good for its age, however there is crazing throughout and rubbing on the bottom. The mirror is damaged and the enamel is likely restored. This is a rare, highly collectible piece that is over two centuries old and it has been priced accordingly. Be sure to view all photos carefully as all sales are final.
